"It is a great privilege to be able to talk to people authentically about their lives and what is going on for them and to sometimes make a positive difference to their experience."
Robert Marx is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and co-lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre.
Here’s his story:
"I work within the Assessment and Treatment in adult secondary care services and also as an education and training lead on three mindfulness trainings and one psychotherapy training programme.
"I started working for the NHS 23 years ago at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in the Mental Health Act office. I then worked as a trainee clinical psychologist and when I qualified three years later I started working in Brighton 20 years ago. There is a lot to like about working in Brighton; I have wonderful colleagues and great professional opportunities.
"I was drawn to working in psychology due to my own vulnerabilities. It is a great privilege to be able to talk to people authentically about their lives and what is going on for them and to sometimes make a positive difference to their experience.
"For me the NHS is an extraordinary and radical idea. It is a unique concept that anybody, anywhere at any social or financial level can have a healthcare intervention appropriate to their needs. It is like going into a supermarket with no price tags on the goods with your choice of what you get being totally unaffected by your ability to pay for it. The NHS is something we should really treasure and I feel privileged to work in such a caring and daring environment.
"In the last 10 years I have watched the NHS be steadily eroded and starved of resources. We know there is a national problem in our health service. Our staff are stretched and exhausted which makes it even more striking that they are continuing to work with such good will and passion to deliver quality care. Despite an increasing intensity of pressure on resources and time, NHS staff stand out in their willingness to keep going the extra mile to provide healthcare for anyone and everyone."
