Shamiso Sakupwanya

Outstanding Student Mentor

What makes a great student mentor? An exemplary role model and an outstanding reflection of what it means to be an effective member of a team.

Shamiso, our overall winner in the Outstanding Student Mentor category, was described in her nomination with the highest of praise.

Nominated by one of the students she mentored, Shamiso has demonstrated time and again her dedication not only to the nursing profession, but to encouraging and developing new nurses in the workplace.

By consistently providing outstanding patient-centred care, she has been an exemplary role model to those she mentors, demonstrating the values at the heart of nursing and supporting students to develop their own professional identity.

Shamiso consistently goes the extra mile, taking the time to contact students before they join the team to reassure and welcome them - something which is definitely appreciated.

Her support has also proved invaluable to BME (Black and Minority Ethnicity) students, who have been able to draw on her experience and advice in relation to professional progression and challenges in the workplace, such as discrimination.

Her nominator said: ‘Shamiso has made learning an easy process for me, as well as an enjoyable one. I truly believe that she has been a positive influence in my nursing practice, and the skills I have enhanced whilst working under her wing will help me in my journey; not only in my career but in life.’
