Over the past year the Mental Health Programme of Health Education England, working across Kent, Surrey and Sussex has been funding a range of workforce education and training initiatives across the region.
The programme, managed by Cavita Chapman, and overseen by Dr Adrian Whittington, Director of Education and Training, has funded projects within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is to increase the involvement of people with lived experience of mental health issues (service users and carers) within the work of the Trust.
The Expert by Experience leadership project was established to create a bank of adult service users and carers who are trained to confidently contribute to the Trust’s work to improve and develop services. This work has been led by Rachael Kenny, Associate Director of People Participation.
One-day workshops were delivered by the Trust's Recovery College network and so far 150 people have graduated from the workshops (between April 2017 and March 2018).
Our Experts by Experience take an active role in recruitment, by sitting on interview panels and attending meetings to contribute their voice in the business planning and strategic decision making process. Their knowledge and expertise will also be utilised in the audit and evaluation of Trust activities.
A celebratory event is being held on 26 June, 10am - 3pm at the City Coast Centre, North Street, Portslade, and equivalent programmes of training are being planned for children and young people and dementia service users.
