Medical oxygen is the only medical gas used by the Trust.
Medical oxygen is used by clinical staff to treat patients. Estates staff are involved in ensuring that it is stored safely and securely.
Although oxygen is not flammable, any increase in its concentration makes it easier to start a fire which then burns hotter and more fiercely. The risks can be managed by keeping all equipment in good condition, by storing cylinders suitably and by adopting safe working practices.
All the medical oxygen used by the Trust is provided by a supplier in the form of portable pressurised gas cylinders. No pipeline systems are used to convey oxygen.
The purpose of this policy is to set out the procedures Trust staff should follow when ordering, receiving, storing, handling, using, returning and monitoring stocks of oxygen cylinders. Adherence to these procedures protects the safety of Trust staff, patients, visitors and contractors.
Clinical services should refer to this document when designing staff training to ensure that baseline competency is achieved with regard to the safe and effective use of medical oxygen.
