Spread a little cheer for people spending Christmas on our inpatient wards at Mill View!

This December in the library at Mill View Hospital we are collecting items to make up Christmas stockings for patients, or to be used in OT pampering sessions on our wards.

Please bring in items to the Sussex Education Centre and add them to the collection box in the library.

· Activities like board games, packs of cards, Xbox or PlayStation games, sports stuff, footballs; in usable condition (don't need to be brand new!)

· Sensory items like stress balls, fidget toys, sour sweets; (smelling salts or essential oils are particularly good for the women's ward)

· New socks or underwear (they always need these a lot!)

· Self-care items like nail polish, unused makeup, deodorant, shower gel, face masks, shampoo and conditioner, giftsets

· Christmas edibles like biscuits or chocolates (non-alcoholic)

We are very pleased to announce that the Sussex Education Centre Library has re-opened as a work and study space.

Over the summer we have introduced a number of improvements to the library space:

  • Two new workstations, bringing the total to twelve.
  • A height-adjustable desk, suitable for wheelchair users
  • Improved physical access around the library
  • Additional power and data points on workstations for more flexible working
  • A new, improved self-service kiosk to enable you to borrow, and return library books even when library staff are not here.

Access to the SEC is now by swipe card only. All SPFT ID cards should give access to the SEC main entrance and the first floor where the library is located. Library members who do not work for Sussex Partnership, but who wish to continue to access the physical library space will need to be issued with a swipe card to gain entry. Contact library staff to arrange this - you can call us on 0300 3040116 or email us at spnt.library-services@nhs.net.

We look forward to seeing you here.

The Sussex Education Centre (SEC) Library at Mill View Hospital (MVH) is currently closed and will remain closed until at least the end of September.

During this time library staff will have access to library stock, so if you want to borrow something, please let us know and we will arrange to get it for you. Email us at spnt.library-services@nhs.net

If you have items to return you can leave them in the red Returns box at the foot of the stairs in the SEC or, alternatively, return them to any other NHS library in the region.

You can see all of the books and journals we hold in our catalogue at KSS Knowledge & Library Services catalogue (koha-ptfs.co.uk)

Do creative or physical activities lead to a change in levels of brain dopamine?

This evidence search report finds that physical activity (PA) may influence the secretion of neurotransmitters and thereby have positive consequences for an individual's vulnerability (i.e., reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms). Therefore, innovative approaches could include PA interventions for treating and preventing mental disorders.

Conversion rates to dementia from Mild Cognitive Impairment

This evidence search report finds that it may be beneficial for memory services to audit conversion rates from MCI to dementia. This may allow further understanding into MCI as a risk factor for dementia, which will help determine which patients are most in need of follow-up.

Evidence re the impact of environment/facilities on therapeutic outcomes and engagement

This evidence search report finds that day hospitals in child and adolescent mental health services can be useful to provide support to young people withmoderate to severe mental illness, leading to reduced inpatient admissions and improving length of inpatient stay. It also improves clinical outcomes for cohorts of young people where inpatient stay is not warranted but higher levels of support are needed.

New to the library service at Mill View Hospital from 1 May 2022 are our first two job-sharing librarians Amy Dunn and Sally Reynolds, who will be sharing the role of Mental Health Specialist Librarian.

Amy has been in this role for many years, and will now be reducing her hours to work Wednesdays to Fridays.

Sally will be transferring from her previous role as a Clinical Librarian working with Children and Women’s Services in Brighton, and will be covering Mondays and Tuesdays in her new role.

This two-person team is sure to bring a new dynamic, with better coverage of hours during periods of leave, greater combination of searching skills, and a pooling of many years’ experience in different NHS libraries combined into the one role.

Do feel free to drop in and see us in the Sussex Education Centre Library at Mill View Hospital, and ask us how we can support you.

You can contact Sally and Amy at uhsussex.mentalhealthlibrarian@nhs.net

Inter Faith Week is 14-21 November 2021, led by The Inter Faith Network, which works to promote understanding, cooperation and good relations between organisations and persons of different faiths in the UK.

People work best when they feel that they can bring their whole selves to the work place. Where people feel that they are welcomed and that inclusion of faith or belief is apparent, it can have a positive impact on a person’s wellbeing and approach to work and colleagues.

Across the country, NHS library and knowledge services are working with therapists and managers to inform the response to Covid-19. Here in Sussex, we have already provided evidence reviews for staff on a range of topics, including:

  • How to make virtual groups safe and effective for people accessing mental health services
  • The impact of Covid-19 on mortality of people with a learning disability
  • Impacts of Covid-19 on perceptions and attitudes towards physical activity and wellbeing
  • Impacts of Covid-19 on LGBTQ+ communities
  • Advice on mental wellbeing during social isolation

We can help you find the answers to any question that comes up in relation to the outbreak. Contact us on spnt.library-services@nhs.net to request an evidence search.

As per the recent government guidance face masks or face coverings must be worn by all NHS hospital staff and visitors in areas where two metre social distancing cannot be maintained, to help stop the spread of coronavirus. This includes non-clinical areas, hospital corridors, and public areas.

So if you are visiting our NHS libraries you may need to wear a Type 2 surgical mask, and please remember to stay two metres apart to keep your fellow colleagues and library staff safe.

Read the guidance here

Opening times

All of our libraries are open and our staff are operating a mixture of home and on site working.

Some library rooms and locations have restrictions on maximum occupancy. Please check with your library ahead of your visit if you wish to book a room or a PC.

Sanitisation measures

We’re taking extra measures to protect our staff and library users, such as cleaning all door handles, computers, phones and self-issue kiosks on a regular basis. Clinical wipes and hand sanitiser are also available for you to use.

Returned books are being quarantined before re-shelving. This may cause slight delays before books are available so thank you for your patience.

Teaching

We are currently offering a mixture of remote and on-site teaching. On-site teaching places are limited to comply with social distancing guidance. Contact your specialist librarian to book a teaching session.

Extended loan periods

The loan period for all items has been extended to eight weeks. You will be contacted if an item is needed by another library member.

Contact spnt.library-services@nhs.net for further help and guidance.

Health Education England’s (HEE) national Library and Knowledge Services team has collated trusted, accessible online patient information resources on Covid 19 for all staff who work directly with patients, clients, and families.
