Autism Community of Practice driving positive change

The Autism Community of Practice (CoP), which was established by the Provider Collaborative in October 2024, delivers a range of in-person and virtual learning sessions. Recent topics have included sensory environments, cooccurring conditions, communication, restrictive practice, and legal frameworks.
Almost 18 months on, the CoP is having a demonstrable impact, with members introducing a range of changes for service users. This includes undertaking sensory audits, making discharge letters more accessible and creating flexible spaces for patient discussions.
Several wards have adopted new approaches to coproduction, helping patients feel more involved and empowered in decisions about their care and members of the CoP have challenged outdated cultures and policies, such as 'no touch' cultures in low and medium secure units, moving towards more neuro-affirming language and practice.
Following feedback from members, the CoP now focuses on one theme per quarter - rather than quarterly - starting with an inperson learning day followed by online sessions that explore practical ways to embed change.
Rachel Cullen, Autism Specialist Adviser for the Provider Collaborative and founder of the CoP, said: "I am immensely proud of what we've achieved in a short space of time. People already have huge workloads, but they’re embedding learning in their everyday practice. The changes we’re seeing - both small and significant - are making a real difference for autistic people across our services.”
