Middlewood responds to shift in demand for eating disorder beds

The unit, which is based in Midhurst in West Sussex, previously supported adults aged 18 to 25. However, following a decrease in demand for eating disorder inpatient beds - as intensive home and community-based services are developed in line with evidence-based practice - Middlewood is expanding its service provision to support a wider age group of patients.
This means that more patients across Kent and Sussex will benefit from an inpatient stay closer to home.
Middlewood, a 12-bed unit which opened in September 2024, has consistently received positive feedback from patients and families.
The team demonstrates a learning culture and openness to feedback and are flexible to patient need. The design and layout of Middlewood, as well as the clinical model, were coproduced with an expert by experience and Elysium, with input from the Provider Collaborative.
