Enhanced eating disorder service offered in Kent

Eating disorder service.pngYoung people admitted to hospital with an eating disorder will now be offered nasal gastric feeding at the Kent and Medway Adolescent Hospital.

The enhanced service, commissioned by the Southern Counties CAMHS Provider Collaborative,  enables children and young people to access eating disorder support closer to home, reducing the need to be admitted to hospital out of area and spend less time in acute medical wards.

During the early stages of development, Experts by Experience were invited to share their experiences about the difficulties that young people may face during and after feeds to help shape the enhanced service.

In preparation for the launch of the service in April 2026, staff received training in nasal gastric feeding and familiarised themselves with the new Standard Operating Procedures.

This latest development is part of a wider programme led by the Provider Collaborative to create a broad range of inpatient and alternatives to admission services at a local level, to make it easier for families and friends to support people whilst in hospital.
