Spotlight on Elysium Emerald Place Clinic

Emerald Place Clinic is a 12-bed inpatient General Adolescent unit for young people aged 12 to 18. Young people who are admitted to the unit will have a primary diagnosis of mental illness across a wide range of disorders and complex needs. These could include mental health conditions such as mood disorders and acute psychosis. Additionally, young people may have co-existing additional needs such as neurodevelopmental disorders, including mild learning disabilities or autism. A young person could also be admitted if they have disordered eating.
Multi-disciplinary team
Therapeutic interventions are delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of staff, including a social worker, psychiatrist, nursing team, activity co-ordinator, occupational therapist, dietician, psychologist and family therapist, to ensure a holistic approach to recovery.
The 59-strong workforce also includes vital support roles including, maintenance, catering, housekeeping and administrative colleagues. Agnes highlights the vital role all members of the team play in supporting the recovery of their young people:
"At Emerald Place, our multidisciplinary team works seamlessly to deliver holistic, compassionate, and person‑centred care to the young people we support. Each profession brings invaluable expertise, and it is our shared commitment to collaboration that ensures every young person receives support tailored to their unique needs.
By working closely with our colleagues in community services, we are able to maintain continuity, share vital insights, and develop care plans that are responsive and effective. These partnerships strengthen our ability to prepare young people for successful transitions back into the community, ensuring that support remains coordinated, consistent, and firmly centred on their ongoing recovery.”
Outstanding education provision
Emerald Place Clinic is rated good by CQC and was recently inspected by OFSTED in which they received an “outstanding” rating. Kate Ball, Headteacher at Emerald Place Clinic School, has recently shone a light on the vital role education plays in young people’s care where pupils aged 13-18 often arrive with limited school history, disrupted attendance and minimal information.
In this environment, education teams effectively become ‘detectives’ - piecing together a young person’s background, needs and aspirations to create a safe, meaningful pathway back into learning.
Education is individualised with bespoke timetables and specialist teachers and additional support provided to enable young people to re-engage at their own pace. The results are improved attendance rates – from 38-50% on admission to 83-90% at discharge.
