New CAMHS psychiatric intensive care unit in Hampshire taking shape

Austen House PICU.pngBuilding work to develop a new seven-bed psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) for young people is underway in Hampshire.

The new unit at Tatchbury Mount in Hampshire, which is due to open by the end of April 2025, will provide specialist inpatient care for young people requiring a PICU level service.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS Foundation Trust and the Hampshire, Sussex and Kent Provider Collaborative are working in partnership to deliver the PICU as part of its commitment to ensure that young people are treated as close to home as possible so that they can stay connected to their families and friends.

To help shape the new service, workshops with young people, parents and carers have taken place, with further events planned until the opening.  These workshops provide an opportunity to share and invite feedback on the plans.

Karen Dixon, Associate Director of Mental Health for CAMHS, Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Following the call to action from NHSE to provide PICU services for young people closer to home, we are very excited to have worked together with all stakeholders to build an innovative service that will meet the future needs of young people and their families.”
