Recovery is possible with the right support

29 July 2025

Kevin is a 41 year old service user with Bipolar Affective Disorder. Here is his blog about the support he has received from DORS (Discharge, Outreach and Recovery service).

"Before I was introduced to DORS, I was living alone in a studio flat and very unhappy. I ended up drinking alcohol for the first time in ten years which led to me being arrested. This was followed by a stay in hospital of about two months. I am alienated from my family, so I got no support with everyday tasks.

When I first started receiving help from DORS I initially felt like it was a ‘box ticking exercise’. However, the staff were very nice and have offered support and direction in achieving my goals. Staff have felt ‘real’ which has been refreshing and made it easier to build a connection with them.

DORS has supported me by providing someone to talk to and then we can look together at the tasks in hand. The service helps to ensure I have completed my tasks, such as paying my bills.

Staff help you to not neglect your priorities which leads to you building some form of routine after a hospital stay.

The support is different to what I have received before as DORS is more person-centred. I feel listened to and the sessions are regular.

Life is a bit more stable now I have moved into my flat. Having DORS has helped provide me with stability and they also signposted me to other forms of support including Mind, Recovery College and Staying Well in case I need that extra help.

I am pleased the service will continue to provide others with support. I wish the DORS team well."
