Please don't visit loved ones in hospital if you have been unwell

22 January 2026

We are advising people not to visit our hospitals if they have any signs of an illness, such as a cold or flu, or are experiencing symptoms like diarrhoea and or vomiting.

This is to help stop the spread of any infection and to help keep everyone safe.

David Wilmott, Interim Chief Nursing Officer, said:

“It is extremely important that anyone who is feeling unwell with cold or flu symptoms, or has been experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting does not visit our hospitals.

“This will help us protect our patients and help to prevent the spread of infection.

“It is important that anyone who is feeling unwell stays at home to rest and recover and only visit hospital when they are symptom free and feeling better. People who have experienced diarrhoea or vomiting should be clear of any symptoms for at least 48 hours before visiting hospital.

“We know how important it is for our patients and their loved ones to see each other and have face-to-face contact but please only attend hospital if you are well. Thank you for your support."

To reduce the risk of spreading infection, those who are well enough to visit can:

  • Wash your hands often with warm water and soap
  • Use tissues to trap germs when you cough or sneeze
  • Bin used tissues as quickly as possible.
