Sussex exceeds national target for physical health checks for people with severe mental illness
Sussex is marking strong progress in supporting people with severe mental illness (SMI) to get vital physical health checks, with the county exceeding the national target for the first time.
Across Sussex, 62% of people with an SMI received a full physical health check between April 2024 and March 2025, surpassing the national ambition of 60%.
These checks include six important elements – blood pressure, blood tests, weight, smoking status, alcohol intake and a medication review – and help to identify early signs of preventable health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. People with severe mental illness are at significantly higher risk of developing these conditions, making regular monitoring essential.
This achievement reflects strong partnership working between NHS organisations; local authority teams; GP practices; and voluntary and community sector organisations. Targeted local campaigns, improved access and closer team working have all contributed to the progress.
Dr Amy Dissanayake, Deputy Medical Director for NHS Sussex, said: "These health checks made a real difference to people's lives. They give us time to really understand what each person needs, catch problems early and support them to stay well."
Adults aged 18 or over with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or experience of psychosis are entitled to a free physical health check once a year at their GP practice. These checks involve a conversation with a doctor, nurse or Access Facilitator alongside simple tests designed to spot potential problems early so people can receive the treatment or support they may need.
GP practices can also offer additional support for those who may find it difficult to attend. This can include longer appointments, bringing a carer, friend or peer support worker, appointments at quieter times of the day, access to a quiet waiting area or other reasonable adjustments to help make the appointment more comfortable.
